The 2-Second Commute Review
Authors: Christine Durst and Michael Haaren
Who it’s for: 1) Aspiring Virtual Assistants
2) If you're in the beginning stages of setting up your VA business
3) If you're interested in learning how to market your VA business
If you've been searching the net, you've probably noticed that there is limited information available for aspiring Virtual Assistants. I
recently discovered one resource that has done an outstanding job of covering the topic of becoming a Virtual Assistant (VA) from A to Z,
including the definition of a VA, what it takes to become a VA, such as personality traits, right down to how to set up a successful VA
Business.
The 2-Second Commute: Join the Exploding Ranks of Freelance Virtual Assistants is straightforward and to the point. One of
it's authors, Christine Durst, is credited as being the founder of the Virtual Assistance industry.
The 2-Second Commute discusses topics such as:
Why You Should Become a VA
Self Assessments and Reality Checks
Developing a Service Menu
Estimating Cost, Setting Fees, and Getting Paid
Setting up Your Business and Your Office from naming your business to forms of business ownership to permits, licenses, and tax
registrations.
Marketing and so much more...
Some of the features of the 2-Second Commute that stood out to me are:
2-Second Spotlight This added a nice personal touch to the book. The 2-second spotlight consists of interviews with
Virtual Assistants and others from all walks of life who share their personal experiences, encouragement, and tips on being a successful VA.
Self Assessments and Reality Checks Not everyone has what it takes to be a Virtual Assistant and business owner. This
chapter gets you involved by asking yourself specific questions and helps you assess your motives, values, family, financial situation, and
lifestyle. There is a special section entitled "Spouse With a Mouse" which helps you to evaluate potential changes in family life and the
importance of your family having an active role in your decision to start a VA Business. It also debunks myths that your spouse or significant
other may have regarding you working at home.
Let the Marketing Begin
This is an excellent chapter that provides some priceless tips and avenues to market your VA Business including various media outlets. It also
discusses target markets and niche marketing. I've picked up a few tips that I'll be utilizing in my VA Business.
VA Toolbox
This section includes resources and information for Virtual Assistants such as VA organizations and associations, certifications, training, and
more. It also includes resources for work at home moms and individuals with disabilities.
I love Christine and Michael's no hype approach. They definitely don't sugar coat the reality and challenges faced when starting a VA
Business. The 2-Second Commute certainly can assist you in making a well informed decision when it comes to starting a VA Business and all that
it entails being a home-based business owner. This book gets two thumbs up from me. I'm very impressed with the quality of information it
contains, and I highly recommend it to any aspiring virtual assistant. It's certainly worth the money and then some.
